Lately I have been asked, “Hey man, how come you guys are getting so many likes on Facebook, and so fast?” Luckily, I was a core part of a band that has not only traveled the world (a few times), sold thousands of records (in the 100,000 world), and have developed thousands of close fans/friends relationships through endless touring and guerrilla marketing.
We simply have been running a facebook ad saying, “Do you remember Bleed the Dream?” It seems as though the Bleed the Dreamers are remembering our band and adding my new one. THAT is one of the reasons that the Fatally Yours page has gotten off to a good start. It is not cheap but well worth reuniting with fans that would have no other way to find my new act.
I’m not sure if people realize the impact Bleed the Dream had on the lives of our friends and fans. There is a folder of tattoos (on the Bleed The Dream MySpace page) that go well over 50 people with permanent lyrics and images of the band. Not many bands have enjoyed that type of loyalty and devotion from their fans. It is what set bTd apart from all the other working indie bands of that time.
Every fan or friend that has lost someone to cancer relates to what I would say is the biggest song we had, “Broken Wings." Penned by a young and firey Brandon Thomas, that song still gets plays around the world. It is a gut wrenching tune that gets played at funerals to this day.
I would never want anyone to think we are using unconventional ways to promote our band. We have always been musicians with integrity and it will stay that way. We don’t need a zillion likes, just quality fans and friends.
Let us good people stick together!!
Within the first set of Fatally Yours songs I envisioned a story that would be told by a different character through each song. Some strayed a bit from that initial approach, but the meat of it is still intact, especially with the latest installment, "Horror Fashion."
This song is told through the cold and evil eyes of the murderer. It is descriptive and in your face. Placing myself in that light was not as easy as putting myself in "the lovers" mind as heard within "Exit Sign" and "Every Moment, possibly because that is "the place" I'm in these days. When I perform this song live, I feel the heavy darkness and madness I'd channeled when I had written it. It is a pretty neat and consuming feeling. I myself have always been drawn to the darker side of life and art. It seemed that all of my favorite artists also channeled their creativity from a darker place (like Danzig, Alkaline Trio, Johnny Cash, and the tons of Metal bands, with their menacing lyrics and dark textures displayed through minor keys and the art of melodic dissonance).
I remember as a young child growing up in a "Born again" household, going to this coffee house type setting where my family would worship. I remember seeing people "slain in the spirit" (passing out from the power of healing through Jesus), the "speaking of tongues" (a language that comes out uncontrollably through the presence of Jesus... or something). As a young child (probably 6 or 7 years old) it scared the fuck out of me. I remember how scared I would be waking up in the middle of the night and running to my parents room to make sure Jesus didn't take them in the Rapture.
Scarred? Yes. That could be why I totally went the other route. Either way, this will not be the only song from a dark lyrical place because I have unlimited things to say about religion and way it made/makes me feel. Coming back to the song, it demonstrates how the killer baited his pray and got what he wanted. The lyrics in the choruses change every time around giving you insight from every angle of this situation. Enjoy the track, it is one of my favorites to play live!!
This blog goes to the young dudes (and ladies) out there that are pursuing music as a hobby or career. It is such a beautiful thing to come together with like-minded individuals and create something out of nothing. As you know, that feeling when you are listening back to a track that everyone is passionate about is a moment to behold.
I would never act like I have ever “made it” or am high and mighty by any means, but I have seen the ins and outs of many musical machines. Some efficient, some broken; some cloudy and some youthful, and full of life. There are infinite ways to describe the millions of situations.
This machine we are running here in the Fatally Yours camp vows to never be too cool to take time for a fan, never compromise the integrity our art from an outside source (management, label, producer, etc.), or let image or fashion take precedence over the one thing that means the most: the music.
If you are like us (in a band of friends), stay true to yourselves. Don’t let illusions of grandeur and dreams of money or fame taint your art, because when we look back at our musical journey as an old men (or women), we all want to be proud of what we have done--on any level--and know that we did things for the right reasons. These memories should equal smiles. Get out there and crush it guys!! Don’t hold back and dream on!!
Whelp, here goes nothin'! This is my very first (and hopefully only) stab at fronting an original rock band and I couldn't be any more excited about it. Over the last few years I began doing solo and duo acoustic gigs in bars locally in Maryland, singing in at least 50% or more of a 4 hour night (that's 40-50 songs a night!) covering a lot of old favorites of mine. I'll make a list available, and if you want, I could possibly take a request or two from y'all and video it!
In doing this, I think I've gained some confidence, and definitely some "know how" as to being a front man, and just allowing myself to relax and just let it go. In previous bands that I've founded or co-founded I have been a main songwriter, but I've always had a singer there to head up that side of things. I have been tied to my bass since birth, it seems. Although, I did record the bass parts in the studio I will playing electric guitar at the live shows (another change)! We are all looking forward to old friends being a part of this thing as well as new friends and fans. Let's rock it!!!
